Daddys come home…: March 22, 1995

By Stephanie Stein

There was a dream, a song, then Daddys of Eden with their debut album, Tomorrow, Yesterday.

No single interpretation can do justice to their repertoire, which suits songwriter and chief Daddy Geoff McPeek just fine. “Most of the songs on the album, I believe, work on a number of levels. There are elements of cynicism to be sure, but also a thread of hope as well,” McPeek says. Ultimately, the listener-friendly bunch collaborated to chill a musical passion and inspire some degree of elation amongst the masses.

But while the Daddys are inspired musically, they are less than brilliant conversationalists. Just when I thought I would never get through the interview even slightly stimulated, McPeek pulled out a March 1995 ASK-DAD issue, a publication for “fans of News-From-The-Abyss!”

ASK-DAD is a visually interesting, compilation of stories, poetry, cartoons, commentary and more information about Daddys of Eden. the magazine is also set up as a forum to interact with fans. McPeek mentions he would come out with more albums but “you’d need a marketing team made up from the CIA to actually sell a product.” The Daddys will definitely receive recognition with this piece of creative craziness. It deliberately lifts from their laid back, musical trips.

Perhaps some of you have sampled the Daddys exquisiteness on CFNY and Much Music. If not, please go see for yourself. Daddys of Eden will be performing March 24 at X-Rays. If you like, jump on the bandwagon and groove with the Daddys as they expect to be touring all across Canada April through May—stay tuned!
