Starting next year, students can learn the ins and outs of the retail industry at Ryerson.
A retail management program will begin next September.
“It’s a one-of-a-kind program,” said Dennis Mock, Ryerson’s VP academic. “We see this as trying to meet the needs of our country.”
The four-year undergraduate program is a university first, said Donna Smith, interim director of the School of Retail Management.
“My phone is ringing off the hook. [Retailers] are asking ‘when are the students coming in?’” she said.
The curriculum, run by the faculty of business, has four themes: customer service, people skills, technology and strategy.
Courses will be tailored to students’ needs, whether they aspire to be buyers for Holt Renfrew of entrepreneurs.
The program, in the works for four years, is starting with 65 students.
Executives from Eaton’s, Club Monaco and Laura Secord, among others, sit on the advisory board.
