A man was arrested and charged with criminal harassment during a student rally today on Gould Street at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), Toronto Police Services (TPS) confirmed in an email statement to The Eyeopener.
The 27-year-old was arrested at approximately 3 p.m. and was taken to the School of Image Arts building at 122 Bond St.
TPS did not specify who the individual was allegedly harassing.
Eyewitnesses at the scene allege the man requested the badge number of a police officer multiple times. He was warned by an officer that if he continued, he would be arrested.
Section 13.2 of the Ontario Code of Conduct for Police Officers says “a police officer shall, upon request, provide their name, badge number and the name of their police service to any member of the public…unless the officer has reason to believe that doing so would undermine the safety of an individual.”
Students for Justice in Palestine at TMU organized the rally in response to a student being physically restrained and detained by TMU Security on Sept. 19, as previously reported by The Eye.
The rally started at Kerr Hall Quad at 1:30 p.m. and was attended by hundreds of students. The demonstration included student speakers, alumni and current and former faculty.
After approximately an hour and a half, the rally moved to Nelson Mandela Walk outside Jorgenson Hall, where they remained for approximately 30 minutes before moving to the intersection of Gould and Bond Streets.
The crowd dispersed at around 4 p.m.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more details come.
