Event Recap: IMA Frosh Exhibition

The IMA’s first ever orientation event, held at the newly renamed IMA Gallery, was exactly what you’d expect. There were boys in bowties, girls with glasses, and some sort of performance art piece that involved someone yelling “I CAN’T SEE ANYTHING!”

If you’ve read any of the three campus newspapers, you already know that Ryerson has a Quidditch team. But the Eyeopener, both amazed and bemused by this story, decided to go one step further and challenge the team to a match of epic proportions. It would be a classic case of the amateurs versus the veterans. It would also be a way to get us out of the office for something other than free food and parties.

The Urban Hip-Hop Union at Ryerson strives to prove that hip-hop not only a lifestyle, but a culture. They definitely made a believer out of first-year journalism student Christina Dun, who let the Eyeopener get a sneak peak into the world of UHHU by allowing us to document her audition for UHHU's very selective dance team. If selected, Christina would go on to compete at the Ontario University Competition for Hip-Hop with the rest of the team.

If you’d asked me on the morning of September 15th, how I felt about that evening’s Urban Hip Hop Union (UHHU) dance team audition, I would have told you that I was pumped and excited to finally be able to dance here in Toronto. But if you’d asked me five minutes before the audition, you’d have seen a look of panic flash across my face.

Video: One-on-one with Shad

Canadian hip hop musician Shad performed on Friday during the Ryerson Students' Union parade and picnic. A graduate of Wilfred Laurier University, Shad recorded his first album in his last year of studies and recently was nominated for the Polaris music prize. His latest album, TSOL, has spawned numerous hits including Rose Garden and Ya I get it. The Eyeopener's community editor Allyssia Alleyne caught up with Shad before he went on stage. A periodic table has also been painted with pride in this quiet passageway that leads to the almost-hidden entrance into the bowels of Kerr Hall.
